PAT Testing

PAT testing - or "Portable Appliance Testing"- is the term used to describe the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure that they are safe to use. Often an electrical defect can be spotted by a visual examination but some defects will only show up by testing.

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 requires that any electrical equipment which has the potential to cause injury is maintained in a safe condition, but the regulations don't actually specify how often this should be carried out. As with most Health and Safety matters it's down to individual risk assessments and common sense - so, for example, a power tool on a building site should be inspected more regularly than a lamp in an office.

The Regulations also don't specify that it has to be carried out by a qualified electrician. What they do say though is that the person has to be competent and have-

  • the right equipment to do the tests
  • the ability to use this test equipment properly
  • the ability to properly understand the test results

-so using a qualified electrician makes sense.
